Learning Development

In 2014, we were engaged by the Department of Defence to design and develop an eLearning course around safety risk management. The aim of the course was to support the introduction of a standardized approach to safety risk management across all the Defence services, as well as covering a civilian and external contractors learner-base. The eLearning content had to be able to be hosted on the Defence LMS and had to adhere to the SCORM and web accessibility standards. In consultation with the business owner and representatives of the three services we developed the storyboards for the eLearning modules and the materials for the face-to-face course. The unique nature of the organization and the existence of disparate approaches to safety risk management across the independent areas posed a challenge we were able to successfully meet.

Learning Delivery

The mainstay of this course was an eLearning suite of four modules and a scenario-based exercise. In addition, we developed a package to enable face-to-face delivery of the course in environments where eLearning is not available.
The course followed a structure based on:
• An explanation of the need for the common approach to safety risk management and the direct benefit the learner would derive from it;
• An explanation of the common terminology;
• An introduction to the safety risk management process and how it applied to the learner’s job activities; and
• The concepts of the course were then reinforced by the learner applying the steps of the process to a practical scenario. Gradual changes applied to this scenario illustrated the need for risk management and the simplicity of the process.
